Software makes or breaks a smartphone. The vivo X300 Pro runs OriginOS 6 (based on Android 15) in the Chinese market, while global units typically run FuntouchOS. My unit runs OriginOS 6, and here is my experience living with this UI.
The Good: Fluidity and Customization
OriginOS is heavily customized, but it is undeniably beautiful and incredibly smooth.
- Animations: The physics-based animations are top-tier. When you close an app, the icon scales perfectly back into its place on the home screen. It feels cohesive and responsive, rivaling iOS in pure fluidity.
- Lock Screen & Widgets: The level of customization is staggering. The interactive widgets (called Nano Kits) are genuinely useful. I use the weather and calendar widgets daily, as they provide rich information without needing to open the app.
- Split Screen & Multitasking: The gestures for invoking split-screen are intuitive, making it very easy to drag a photo from the gallery directly into a messaging app.
The Bad: Bugs & Annoyances
Because this is a Chinese ROM, it comes with a learning curve and a few headaches:
- Aggressive Battery Management: Out of the box, OriginOS is ruthless about killing background apps to save battery. If you don’t tweak the settings, you will miss WhatsApp or Slack notifications. (See my fix below).
- Bloatware: There is a significant amount of pre-installed Chinese bloatware. Fortunately, about 95% of it can be easily uninstalled or disabled in the first 10 minutes of use.
- Translation Quirks: Occasionally, buried deep in the settings menus, you will find slightly awkward English translations.
My Essential Setup Settings
When I factory reset my phone, these are the first things I change to make OriginOS usable for a Western workflow:
- Fixing Notifications: I go to
Settings > Battery > Background power consumption management. For essential apps (WhatsApp, Gmail, Slack), I change the setting from “Smart Control” to “Do not restrict background power usage”. I also lock these apps in the recent apps menu by swiping down on their card. - Disable RAM Extension: Virtual RAM often slows down the storage drive and drains battery. I immediately go into
Settings > RAM and storage spaceand disable the “Extended RAM” feature. The phone has plenty of physical RAM anyway. - Change the Default Keyboard: I swap the default input method to Gboard immediately for better predictive text and multi-language support.
